It’s just going to be 20th
Nov in just a few days but the air is filled with the celebrations for
Children’s Day bringing in excitement, laughter and fun not just for kids but
for people of all ages. Many countries have established a Children’s day
although this day might not be a public holiday globally but some Countries
observe this day as a holiday. The top 3 countries to celebrate this day
religiously are India, UK and USA. They are prominent for celebrating this day by
putting up entertainment programs for children from music, drama to art
competitions and also discussing social awareness topics on child protection
and rights.
In India this day is celebrated
in the fond remembrance of India's First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru,
fondly known as Chacha Nehru among children. He was known to be extremely
fond of children and advocated various issues in regards to children and one of
the most critical one was child education.
If we go back to history this day
began on the second Sunday of June in 1857 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard,
pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts
and this day was fondly named as the Rose Day and further evolving the United
Nations established this day as November 20th in 1954 and this day was marked
and celebrated internationally to promote unity and awareness, mutual exchange
and understanding and to initiate action to promote the welfare of children globally.
Moving down 6 years later in 1959
the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the rights of the Child
marking it as a milestone achieved in Child Awareness and protection and in
1989 the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the child.
This day now is not just
celebrated to remember children all over the world but activists and other
prominent figures globally take this day as an opportunity to discuss various
issues that children face globally from Child Abuse, Amnesty for children to
Violation of Child Rights including Poverty, Violence and Discrimination.
Apart from serious discussions the day is also
celebrated on a lighter note in schools and institutions with drama, debate,
dance and distributing sweets amongst children and while we talk about the celebrations
and importance of this day the time is ticking for the clock to hit 12:00AM and
Google did not want to be left behind so they have marked this year’s children’sday celebration with a doodle don’t forget to check it out amongst all your
other celebrations for the day.
